Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, calling him a symbol of compassion, humility, and spiritual strength. The Pope, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 88, had a special place in the hearts of many, including the people of India, the Prime Minister noted.

“Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will always be remembered as a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage by millions across the world,” PM Modi posted on X.

He also reflected on the Pope’s enduring connection with India: “His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”

PM Modi had met Pope Francis during the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, where the two shared a warm embrace and discussed global and humanitarian issues. Their first meeting took place in 2021 at the Vatican, where they covered topics including the global Covid-19 crisis.

Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian also mourned the Pope’s passing, stating, “A profound loss for the global community. His life of service, compassion, and faith touched millions.”

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis died early Monday morning at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. In line with his personal wishes, the funeral rites will be simplified. His body will be displayed at St. Peter’s Basilica for public mourning, with funeral mass and ceremonies to follow in the coming days.

The Church has now entered the Papal Interregnum, the period between the death of a pope and the election of his successor. The conclave to elect a new pope will commence after a nine-day mourning period, known as the Novendiales.

As tributes pour in from around the world, India joins the global community in mourning the loss of a spiritual leader whose legacy of peace, humility, and service will be remembered for generations.
